Match Preview: Wolves v Newcastle

Wolves v Newcastle

bet365 match odds: Wolves 7/10, Draw 11/4, Newcastle 19/4

Wolves will be hoping to consolidate their position as best of the rest outside the top six when they host Newcastle United on Monday night.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are seventh in the table,12 points adrift of sixth-placed Arsenal.

The Black Cats’ will be targeting all three points, which would see them move closer to the top 6 while putting some distance between themselves and a bunched-up mid-table.

Wolves’ first season back in the top flight couldn't have gone any better. They have adapted well to life in the Premier League and have shown scant respect for reputations.

Espirito Santo’s men have taken points off five out of the top six clubs, with the exception of Liverpool. The sequence of results include outright victories over Chelsea and Tottenham.

They also knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup, underlining their credentials as a side full of self belief and at home among the big boys.

Saturday’s results will have given Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez food for thought.

Cardiff City and Burnley’s victories over fellow strugglers Southampton and Brighton respectively pushed Newcastle United two places down the table.

The Magpies are one place above the relegation zone only by virtue of a superior goal difference to Southampton. No doubt this will influence the visitors’ approach at Molineux.

Wolves won the reverse fixture 2-1 at St James Park in December, thanks to an injury-time winner by Matt Doherty. They will be favourites again to win the return match on their own turf on Monday night.

Wolves geared up for the clash with some warm weather training in Marbella.

Nuno Espirito Santo travelled to Spain with a squad of 23, from which he will pick his side for the visit of Newcastle United.

Diogo Jota, who missed the FA Cup replay win at Shrewsbury with a knock, and Ruben Vinagre are both slight doubts.

Newcastle boss Benitez has more selection options following the return of four players from their respective injuries.

Goalkeeper Karl Darlow, defender Paul Dummett and midfielders Mohamed Diame and Ki Sung-yueng are all available for the trip to Molineux.

Yoshinori Muto is also back from international duty, while Miguel Almirón could make his debut after arriving in the January transfer window.

Rob Elliott and Jonjo Shelvey remain sidelined.
