Tipico bookmaker review

Background

Tipico Co. Ltd. started life relatively recently (in 2004) with the aspiration to become a major player in the online gaming industry. Growth has not been as swift as the Malta-based company would have hoped, though they are making steady - if not spectacular - in-roads.

With a focus on their sports book, they also offer a casino, a 'live' casino, as well as a mobile betting app and a live betting product. Being new kids on the block in comparison to their more illustrious rivals was always going to be tough, so it will be interesting to see how their strategy for growth pans out in the coming years.

Tipico Odds and Markets

As one might expect for a newer organisation, the range and depth of betting markets in their sports book does not compare well to the market leaders. Having said that, they are constantly looking to expand and have added plenty of markets for minor football (soccer) leagues such as those based in the Middle East (with over 200 markets for Saudi Arabian football at the time of writing).

In terms of the odds, they are generally a little way short of the market leaders in many events, but do occasionally (very occasionally) stick their necks out. This is to be expected from a relatively new bookie that is trying to manage their risk and grow their market share in a sustainable manner. But that's not enough to entice in punters who will clearly follow the best prices.

Another slight bugbear is that there appears no way to change the format of the odds on the website, with the default being the use of decimal odds (but with a comma instead of a decimal point, strangely).

Tipico Bonus Offers

Tipico.com currently offers a 100% deposit bonus up to a maximum amount of 100 EUR. Note, the offer is only valid for residents from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Turkey and Hungary, hence nothing for the large UK market, which will be a disappointment to many.

The customer services department tell me they are planning to extend the offer at some point in the future, but that they 'cannot give further details at the moment'. So it would be worth checking back on the site in the coming weeks or months.

Other than the initial bonus, promotions and free bets are conspicuous by their absence on the Tipico website, and this is an area that needs to improve if they are to make any progress in growing their brand.

In-Play and Mobile Betting

The live betting area of the Tipico site is not as immediately attractive as others. The layout takes a little getting used to and the information could be presented in a more user-friendly manner, in our opinion. The only real 'feature' of this section is the sound of cheers when a goal is scored, but this soon becomes irritating, so it is thankful they give you the option to turn it off.

The mobile app can be accessed through the browser in your mobile by visiting m.tipico.com, or you can opt to receive the link by SMS through the website. In many ways the app has a nicer feel than the website itself, being 'cleaner' and offering a more intuitive interface. This is the one area that is reasonably impressive.

Customer Service

Telephone: N/A
Email: support_en@tipico.com
Address: Portomaso Business Tower, St. Julian's, STJ 4011, Malta
Other contact methods: fax +356 25 707 399

In this day and age, to not offer either telephone or live chat customer support is really asking for trouble. How a bookmaker can profess to take their customer services seriously when permitting only email and fax contact is beyond me. Add to that their customer care service is only available from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m. each day, and there are a few issues in this department.

To be fair to them, they do offer support in German, English, French, Turkish and Italian, and 365 days a year; and they responded to a number of email enquiries within minutes rather than hours, so it is not all bad.

Conclusion

Tipico is a bookmaker that is new to the game, and to be honest it shows. If they are serious about accumulating a decent share of the massive online gaming market, they will need to buck their ideas up.

Firstly, the website could do with an overhaul to make it more attractive, and to look less like an off-the-shelf corporate site. Also, the dearth of free bets and bonuses gives new customers little reason to vacate their usual gambling haunts, especially as the odds here are generally not as good as others.

Overall, a disappointing bookmaker, but - as mentioned - it could be worth checking them in the future to see what progress they have made.
